The home wire recorder appeared in U.S. stores about 1947. The
recordings they made were saved onto at least half-a-dozen formats
until about 1952 when this system lost its marketing struggle with
tape. Although recorders disappeared from retail shelves, supplies
of blank wire were available as a specialty item for a number of years
afterwards. The much smaller Minofon system lingered through the 1960s.
Right now I can play back the products of two systems, those in
the Webster-Chicago family and that of GE/Peirce.
